Sand Animation

Ukraine artist Kseniya Simonova creates temporary drawings with sand on a light box. Each picture she draws tells a story very personal to her. Watch the video clip and discuss what you think the art and story is about? Why do you think people in the audience got emotional?

Is It Fair?

Today one of my classes had to clean up early. Their behavior was not acceptable for a 7th grade class. There were people walking around the room aimlessly, people trying to paint on their hands and a few people trying to take others materials without permission. Due to this behavior the entire class had to clean up early and spend the remainder of the class writing me a letter telling me how their behavior was unacceptable, how they will change next class period and why I should let them continue the project next week.

Many students felt I should only punish the individuals who were causing problems. I felt that the whole class should be punished because others sat by and did nothing as this behavior occurred. In my opinion it is the responsibility of the entire class to help one another out and keep each other in line.

Tell me your thoughts. Do you think it is fair to punish the whole class or  just the individuals?

Controversial Art---Michael D'Antuono

Above is a piece of art titled "The Truth" by Michael D'Antuono. It has a politically and religiously charged message that some feel is offensive. Artists often use art to make a statement about an issue or raise questions. Do you feel that this piece of art is appropriate or is it offensive? Also comment on where, if at all, this artwork should be allowed to be displayed.

The web page below has a video of the artist explaining this painting and others. You may want to check it out to get a full understanding of the artist's intent.
